Fun Geography Games for Kids

Geography is a subject filled with matter of facts. Unfortunately, there are simply too many facts to remember, which can become quite a challenge to keep up with, even for adults. However, it is no doubt that knowing these facts can widen your view beyond the place you live at, which is why kids are being taught the subject. But as mentioned, Geography can be a pretty dull subject. So how do we tune it up to make it an interesting one? It all plays up in making use of more than the two usual senses in classroom learning – sight and sound. Here are some fun Geography games for kids to make learning fun.

Little Explorer’s Map Quest

For kids, looking alone does facilitate learning well. It is the practising that makes learning easier. Instead of the conventional identify the places on the map, try this for a change. Go outdoors, and using a chalk, draw the world map on the floor. If outdoors is not permitted, clear the classroom furniture to the side of the class and stick scrap paper to form the world map on the floor. Then, let your students become the explorers of the world. Allow them to go from country to country as you teach them about each place. If costumes or props that identifies with the place, let your student play the part. Teach them the greetings of each place as well, which really does the language department a favour. This makes them feel like they are part of a culture, more than just a mere explorer.

The Geography Restaurant

If you actually have the ability to attain different dishes from the various regions or countries, make a mini restaurant out of your classroom. Let each of your student see, smell, touch, and taste the food, so they will learn the different types of cuisines available. Prepare menus for them and arrange the tables to look exactly like a restaurant. On the other hand, if that is not very feasible, you can have a picnic in the class instead. Teach them what the staple food are for each region and relevant things that they may be interested in.

My Own World

Let your students express themselves as well. Provide them with an array of recyclable items to create their own representation of the world map. This lets them share their own views of the world, and who knows, you might just find the right teaching tool for other students if they find them interesting!

There are many other Geography games for kids as well, but the best ones basically allow them to feel that they learning together, instead of learning from.
